Johnston Project

Completed Renovation

When you first approach the two-story Johnston house, with its freshly painted cream colored brick, black shutters and antique half-round gutters, it appears unassuming for all its inward and outward transformation.  The two story addition on the back of the house, having been bricked in along the side, appears as if it could have been there for decades.  As you move up the front walk and enter, you realize the Johnston house has been transformed back to the character and charm that Tahoma Terrace boasts.

Before Renovation Began

The Tahoma Terrace neighborhood in Lexington is well known for it’s charming mix of homes situated comfortably adjacent to the UK Arboretum, and within close range of UK, downtown, and several major Lexington hospitals.  Despite it’s proximity, this quaint area of town feels tucked away in its canopy of mature trees and big backyards.  The house at 113 Johnston, which became the project of Kelley Building Company for the past six months, was no exception to the neighborhood charm-factor, but it was desperately in need of renovation.

When we first entered the Johnston project it was “well worn” to be kind.  Built in 1933, and owned for over 50 years by the previous owners (and vacant for over a year at the time we purchased it), the house had not been updated in at least its last five decades of ownership.  A family had been raised there – the children all grown and gone their separate ways with families of their own.  The overgrown yard had been neglected, along with the home’s interior, and all were in disrepair.

After six months of top-to-bottom  interior and exterior renovations, 113 Johnston gained a brand new kitchen (expanded by the two-story addition)with new Bosch appliances, limestone white cabinets with pewter glaze cabinets, and granite countertops.   A new downstairs half bath, deck & covered porch with two entry points off the house, mudroom with laundry facilities, new master suite with full bathroom (part of the upstairs addition), renovated upstairs bathroom, beautifully restored hardwood floors throughout, new front walk and landscaping, Delta plumbing fixtures, and more.  Previously an 1,849 sf, three bedroom, 1.5 bath house, the Johnston project is now a 2233sf, four bedroom, 2.5 bath house.
